Dolzaina
A double reed instrument that is commonly called a “quiet shawm” was found on board the Mary Rose, a ship which sank in 1543. It could be the only surviving specimen of a Dolzaina. The term Dolzaina in different variations like douçaine, dolzana etc. first appears in medieval literature which implies it is a quiet shawm. Later in the 16th century we find a number of arrangements that call for a Dolzaina. One of them is in the description of a ducal wedding in Munich in 1558. I reconstructed the necessary Dolzainas for a recording of this wedding music done by Musica Fiata (Harmonia mundi). The Mary Rose instrument plays in the bass range. It has a cylindrical bore, two keys and is made from boxwood and cherry. I make copies of the Mary Rose instrument and scaled versions that play in the alto, tenor, bass and great bass ranges. The bass and great bass instruments have one key for the lowest note. Upwards extension keys are optional.
